Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader, from Renaissance Learning, is a guided independent reading programme that motivates children of all ages and abilities to read more books for pleasure.  Accelerated Reader offers more than 27,000 quizzes on the most popular fiction and non-fiction titles to determine whether your child has understood what they have read.

At Elm Grove Accelerated Reader is used throughout KS2 (Years 2-6). However, some Year 1 children will use it as we progress through the year.  This helps our teachers accurately and efficiently monitor reading progress through the quantity, difficulty and comprehension of books read independently.

Espresso

Espresso, from Discovery Education, is an online cross-curricular service that provides video-rich resources to schools throughout the UK. It contains thousands of videos and multimedia activities, as well as a weekly news service — all designed by teaching professionals.

We use Espresso in school to help motivate, engage and support learning in the classroom. Now your child can continue to enjoy what they have been doing at school, and you can be involved in their learning at home.

IXL

IXL, from IXL Learning, is a comprehensive learning program offering unlimited Maths and English practice problems in thousands of skills - all of which are aligned to the national curriculum. One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your child's progress!

In addition to making learning exciting, IXL is designed to help your child learn at his or her own pace. The program is adaptive and will adjust based on your child's demonstrated understanding of the material. All of your child's results will be saved, so you can monitor his or her progress anytime by clicking on the Analytics tab at the top of the page.

NumBots

Whilst the school is closed the children have access to a brand new online programme called NumBots. This is designed by the same team as Times Table Rock Stars but is for younger children who have not learned their times tables yet.  Instead it focusses on number recognition, number bonds as well as addition and subtraction facts.

All children in EYFS and KS1 (Years R-2) will have been provided with a NumBots log on.  If any older children wish to log on to NumBots, they can do so using their Times Table Rock Star log on details.

All children start at the same place in Story Mode, and when they get to a certain stage they unlock Challenge Modes.  The idea is that they play little and often, and this will significantly improve their understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts.

Purple Mash

Purple Mash, from 2Simple, is a creative educational website for children. It is a is a cross-curricular resource covering Art to Science and all subjects in between.

Purple Mash is a safe environment that does not require any downloading or allow interaction with people online and children cannot make any financial transactions.

We will be encouraging the children to continue their learning at home and Purple Mash is a great resource for this. Your child will be taught how to use Purple Mash in school and will be able to use it without supervision, but you may want to take a few minutes to explore it yourself so that you can help them with their work.

Times Table Rock Stars

All children in KS2 (Years 2-6) have a log on for Times Table Rock Stars.

When it comes to times tables, speed AND accuracy is important – the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations.

Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help your child master the times tables!  To be a Times Table Rock Star you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 3 seconds!

World famous rock musicians are the best at what they do because they've spent hours practising guitar chords, writing music or playing on the drums. It's just the same with times tables – all Times Table Rock Stars need to practise and practise and practise.

And this is where you come in. For your child to be fully motivated and for them to get the best out of the practice, they need your help. Without your praise and your reminders, without you sitting down next to them or checking their work, practising times tables will not feel important to your child.

Research shows that daily practise is the best strategy for children to learn these important facts.  Short bursts of daily practise are much more effective than spending hours once a week.
